The Editing of Arabic Manuscripts category saw Dr. Mustafa Said from Egypt win for his study titled ‘Safinat al-Mulk wa-Nafisat al-Fulk (Shehab al-Din) al-Muwashah wa-Musiqa al-Maqam al-Natiqa bil-Arabiya bayn al-Tantheer wal-Maras’ (The Ship of Possession and the Precious Ship (Shehab al-Din) - Muwashah and Arabic-speaking Maqam Music between Theory and Practice), published by ElAin Publishing in 2023. The researcher conducted a comprehensive methodological study, showcasing his scientific acumen and enhanced prowess to analyse, understand, and critique. Dr. Said’s work makes it evident that he made a significant effort to organise his report and present information clearly to the reader. Remarkably this study stands out as the first comprehensive report from a scientific point of view and includes an in-depth study and statistical charts of melodies and connections.

ضمن البرنامج الرمضاني لبيت السناري بالقاهرة يقدم الموسيقيّ الدكتور مصطفى سعيد، مساء الثلاثين من شهر مارس الجاري في تمام الساعة التاسعة مساء، أمسية موسيقى عربية معاصرة، إحياء للذكرى الثمانين لرحيل الشيخ علي محمود شيخ أهل النغم الذي رحل عن عالمنا عام 1943.
تتضمن الأمسية، التي تستلهم روحها من نسمات شهر رمضان الكريم، عزفا وغناء منفردين على العود، ويستهلها سعيد بمقطوعة تحية لمعرض "دوائر الهامش" للتشكيلي وليد علاء الدين الذي يستضيفه البيت حتى الخامس من شهر أبريل المقبل.
ثم مختارات عزف وغناء فصيح من وصلتي "زوار المقام" و"مقام الحكمة" من تلحين سعيد لنخبة من عيون الشعر العربي منهم أبو منصور الحلاج، أبو نصر الفارابي، أبو الطيب المتنبي، ابن سينا، محيي الدين بن عربي، عمر بن الفارض، ميمنة العاشقة، وغيرهم، كما تتضمن مختارات من أعمال إمام المنشدين الشيخ علي محمود.

"Technique & Repertoire, Two Faces of the Same Coin"
Labyrinth Musical Workshop always includes instrumental seminars in its program, derived from various modal musical traditions. Although it may seem like a simple term in a given title, ‘Technique & Repertoire’ represents the basis for the study of an instrument. In the case of Eastern music, an instrument is somehow attached to the place of its origin, making it impossible to study its technique without delving into a certain repertoire. The lifelong study of an instrument (technique & repertoire) will subsequently allow us to use this acquired knowledge to study different musical traditions, as well as to create our own style.
The seminar will focus on specific techniques that are derived from the morphology of the Arabic language.
At first there will be an introduction to the modal and rhythmic system.
In the Modal system, we will distinguish between a modal scale, a main mode (Maqam), and a branched or subsidiary mode.
In the rhythmic system, we will study
· the formation of rhythms- simple and complex.
· the way we count them linguistically and
· the relation with poetic meters
The goal of such an introduction in Playing Oud, is the pick movement, the types of picking and the relation between the right and left hands (picking and pressing).
Some introductory examples will be shown, Musical phrases that a player can interpret on Oud with several endless possibilities through different morphological divisions.
In case time allows, some comparative studies will be done which reflect the various Arabic “dialects” (performance styles) in playing the instruments as well as influences and interactions with other modal music traditions.

Abstract
This article critically considers how the musical piece, “Al-Burda,” has introduced ground-breaking
formal and rhythmic innovations within Arab contemporary traditional music. I explore the
centrality of Mustafa Said’s musical adaptation of Arabic prosody in generating new rhythmic
modes whilst highlighting Said’s claims of continuity with an Arab literary and musical tradition
through the musical adaptation of the poetics of mu’arada, which means building upon pre-existing
models. This article draws upon postcolonial theory as a fundamental tool of analysis for the
underpinning socio-political commentary present at every stage of creation and production of
“Al-Burda.”

وأُقيمت الأمسية التي أحيتها "مجموعة أصيل للموسيقى العربية الفصحى المعاصرة" في "قبة الغوري" بالقاهرة، حيث أدت المجموعة نصوصاً غنائية للشاعرين الكبيرين قام بتلحينهم الموسيقار مصطفى سعيد.
وبهذه المناسبة قال سعادة الدكتور علي بن تميم، رئيس مركز أبوظبي للغة العربية،" جاء اختيارنا للنصوص المغناة من تراث شاعرين عربيين كبيرين هما أبي الطيب وأحمد شوقي اللذان يجمع بينهما -رغم الفارق الزمني- ذلك النسغ الحضاري الممتد في عروق كل مبدع عربي أصيل عرف الجوهر الحقيقي للغة العربية بمعناها الواسع الذي لا يقف عند حدود الحرف، بل ما يقوم عليه الحرف من تراث فكري وعلمي وفني وثقافي وإنساني، وما يقوم على فهم واستيعاب أبعاد الحرف من بناء حضاري شامخ علينا أن نعنى به ونعلو".

The event shed light on the legacy of Abu Al Tayyib Al Mutanabbi, whose work was much loved by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founding Father of the UAE, as well as on the memorable writings of Ahmed Shawqi, highlighting the leading role the two poets played in the history and development of Arab poetry.
On this occasion Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC said: “We selected texts by two of our greatest Arab poets, Abu Al Tayyib Al Mutanabbi and Ahmed Shawqi, who, despite living centuries apart, are connected by the same values and inspiration, both understanding the true essence of the Arabic language and the intellectual, scientific, artistic, cultural, and human heritage behind it.”

After 20 years of performing exclusively outside of their homeland, playing shows in more than 20 countries including at the Abu Dhabi Festival and London's Shubbak Festival, Asil Ensemble performed in Cairo on Thursday for the first show since their formation in 2003.
The concert was held at the Sultan Al-Ghuri Complex, the 16th-century mausoleum, built by one of the last of the Mamluk rulers, Sultan Al-Ashraf Qansuh Al-Ghuri.
The group's glaring absence of a concert in Egypt is generally attributed to the non-commercial nature of their repertoire. It was something Said alluded to during the performance.
“What we do here is trying to bring to life this essential form of Arabic arts and literature,” he says.
“To be here in Egypt with all of you, with thanks to the Arabic Language Centre in Abu Dhabi, fills me with the kind of gratitude I really find hard to describe.”
For those in the audience, the magnitude of the event was overwhelming. Cairo resident Souad Al Sharif said she was in tears throughout the show. “This music and this art form is very important,” she told The National.
“Not everything has to be for a commercial benefit. We have to safeguard the arts and I am glad there are organisations out there that can invest in putting these shows together because of its importance to Arabic culture.
