The Editing of Arabic Manuscripts category saw Dr. Mustafa Said from Egypt win for his study titled ‘Safinat al-Mulk wa-Nafisat al-Fulk (Shehab al-Din) al-Muwashah wa-Musiqa al-Maqam al-Natiqa bil-Arabiya bayn al-Tantheer wal-Maras’ (The Ship of Possession and the Precious Ship (Shehab al-Din) - Muwashah and Arabic-speaking Maqam Music between Theory and Practice), published by ElAin Publishing in 2023. The researcher conducted a comprehensive methodological study, showcasing his scientific acumen and enhanced prowess to analyse, understand, and critique. Dr. Said’s work makes it evident that he made a significant effort to organise his report and present information clearly to the reader. Remarkably this study stands out as the first comprehensive report from a scientific point of view and includes an in-depth study and statistical charts of melodies and connections.

"Technique & Repertoire, Two Faces of the Same Coin"

Labyrinth Musical Workshop always includes instrumental seminars in its program, derived from various modal musical traditions. Although it may seem like a simple term in a given title, ‘Technique & Repertoire’ represents the basis for the study of an instrument. In the case of Eastern music, an instrument is somehow attached to the place of its origin, making it impossible to study its technique without delving into a certain repertoire. The lifelong study of an instrument (technique & repertoire) will subsequently allow us to use this acquired knowledge to study different musical traditions, as well as to create our own style.

The seminar will focus on specific techniques that are derived from the morphology of the Arabic language.
At first there will be an introduction to the modal and rhythmic system.

In the Modal system, we will distinguish between a modal scale, a main mode (Maqam), and a branched or subsidiary mode.

In the rhythmic system, we will study
· the formation of rhythms- simple and complex.
· the way we count them linguistically and
· the relation with poetic meters

The goal of such an introduction in Playing Oud, is the pick movement, the types of picking and the relation between the right and left hands (picking and pressing).

Some introductory examples will be shown, Musical phrases that a player can interpret on Oud with several endless possibilities through different morphological divisions.

In case time allows, some comparative studies will be done which reflect the various Arabic “dialects” (performance styles) in playing the instruments as well as influences and interactions with other modal music traditions.

Abstract
This article critically considers how the musical piece, “Al-Burda,” has introduced ground-breaking
formal and rhythmic innovations within Arab contemporary traditional music. I explore the
centrality of Mustafa Said’s musical adaptation of Arabic prosody in generating new rhythmic
modes whilst highlighting Said’s claims of continuity with an Arab literary and musical tradition
through the musical adaptation of the poetics of mu’arada, which means building upon pre-existing
models. This article draws upon postcolonial theory as a fundamental tool of analysis for the
underpinning socio-political commentary present at every stage of creation and production of
“Al-Burda.”

في رحاب الصمت:
والسَكْت خَيْر لِلْفَتَى فِي الحِينِ مِنْ بَعْضِ المَقالة.

ماذا يحدث في الصمت؟ حين لا يسمَع شيء ولا ينظر إلى شيء؟
حاولت فعل هذا، أنغام تجوب السمع والفكر، بعضها سمِع من قبل، وأغلبها متخيَّلة ليس لها ماض في الذاكرة. أصمت وأسمع ما لا أسمع، وأحيانا أخرج العود أو أتابع النغم بصوتي، أو كليهما، فيخرج النغم مكرَّرا أو جديدا لم يوجد من قبل.

هل يتحمل مستمع عكس هذه الحال؟
تجربة أكثر منه مشروع أمسية موسيقية، لم أستطع تسجيل ما أسمع وليس له ماض من الذاكرة، لكن أقله أستطيع إعادة استحضار ما يأتيني في لحظات الصمت مما أعلم مصدره في التسجيلات.
جمعت، وضعت بنفس الطريقة العشوائية، ما يأتيني من يميني أو شمالي، أو مختلط، أو ما يمشي بالصوت من جهة إلى جهة، أو ما يظهر ويختفي خلف غيره من الموجات. ويتخلل كل هذا الصمت!

رحلة من أكثر من ثلث ساعة بين المخطوطات التي قرِأَتْ، (تؤَدَّى على العود المنفرد)، وقديم التسجيلات التي رقمَتْ. مقارنات بين أداء قصيدة واحدة لأكثر من مؤد، أو عملا آليا ما، مقارنة بين أدائه العربي والتركي، صوت تقسيم ما، أو جملة وردت في أغنية ما "غريب وجيت المنازل" (معناها: غريب أتيت إلى منازلكم) أو "ملعون زماني الي انقضى، من بعد ما كنا سوى" (معناها: ملع ن زماني الذي ينقضي بعد فراقنا)، أغلبها يحاور بالعود، ويتداخل مع أنغام معاصرة.

أنغام تأتي فرادى أو مجتمعة! وصمت يتخللها، حتى صوت لفة الفنگراف! موجات صوتية في قنوات منفصلة بين أذني اليمنى واليسرى، أو تنتقل من إحداها إلى الأخرى، موجات وقنوات كالطباق بعضها فوق بعض أسمعها من الخارج، أو من عودي، أو من أعماق النفس. لم تستطع الآلة ولا البرامج إيصالها كما أسمعها، لكن أحسب السامع سيسمع بعد ذهابه ما أسمع في نفسي، أو يسمع من نفسه شيءا يستطيع إدراك القصد والمعنى به.

لعلها غربة الزمن، لعلها غربة النفس في الجسم، أو لعلها حبسة النغمة في التسجيل.

Into The Silence Zone,
In literature and in history, all the people known for their wisdom were known above all for their silence. One can easily find out in these books that this prophet or that philosopher was silent most of the time and spoke only when it was necessary to speak.

What happens in these moments of silence? What do we hear? Do we digest what we have heard before?
Do we think about them? Or do we listen again from the inside, as if they were passing from the inside of the ear to the outside in a reverse movement, like a current in the ocean?

In silence, I usually hear melodies or sounds that I do not recognise from memory. A few times, however, I hear melodies as if from a phonograph repeating the same record. Sometimes it works more than a phonograph, sometimes it is direct, sometimes deep. Sometimes close, sometimes distant.
Compare a poem sung in two melodies by two singers from different decades. But not only the melodies, but also the quality of the records, the progress over time, the technology and the differences between record companies in sound.

Differences between two dialects in the performance of a piece of music, Turkish and Arabic performances of the same piece. Is it really the same piece after these performances?
In this work, I try to reflect this inner hearing that has no order or reason. Have a dialogue with my oud, or let us say, with my idea of how my interpretation or vision of these waves comes together.

A dialogue between memory and recollection that does not aim to show what is listed inside, but to try to let the listener imagine him/herself, to perhaps discover what can be heard inside each listener.
