Abstract from the Master’s Thesis: Modal System of the Inshad Tradition in Egypt in the Modern Period

The theory of the modal system of the Inshad, though formulated by the Mashayekh for an educational purpose, shows a clear consistency with corresponding musical practice. This consistency is clarified through modal analysis of recorded material employing the micromodal and minimodal investigation procedures, showing that the orally transmitted Inshad modal theory is a reliable theory, unlike the written theories presented in Arabic music books of the modern period. This finding suggests, in addition, that Mashayekh theory could be useful in our day for both educational and practical purposes in Arabic music tradition.
